Nasrin Rafiq

Gender Mainstreaming Practicum Coordinator with USAID/Deloitte, Kabul, Afghanistan

I was granted a fellowship by the ITC-ILO to participate in course A 901069, “Mainstreaming Gender Equality Concepts and Instruments Training”  from 3 to 14 November 2008 in Turin, Italy.

The main objective of the course was to promote gender equality in the world of work by introducing participants to gender concepts and the use of  best practices, strategies and tools to give our organizations a gender perspective and integrate a gender approach into our specific fields of work.

Impact on my career

My participation in the gender mainstreaming training programme of the ITC-ILO has effected my career both qualitatively and quantitatively. I was instantly hired as a full-time gender mainstreaming practicum coordinator by USAID/BearingPoint  to drive a new initiative and convince, mobilize and persuade partners and stakeholders to obtain lasting results that improve women’s lives in business or career.

During the training course, I learned that gender mainstreaming is a good way to find out what we have achieved, what capacity we have, and the gaps and challenges. We can then design activities that will help bring gender into the mainstream of new strategies.

The experience I gained at the workshop will be evaluated in the context of Afghanistan and incorporated into my future work.

I would therefore like to express my appreciation to the International Training Centre of the ILO, in particular to the Gender and Non-Discrimination Programme, for granting me the golden opportunity to take part in their training programme.
