Azam Nausheen

Message from Azam Nausheen, Knowledge Management Officer/ Gender Trainer NRSP-Institute of Rural Management (IRM), Islamabad, Pakistan, participant in the 2011 Gender Academy.

I participated in the Gender Academy at the Centre in November 2011. It was a great experience that opened up new horizons with regard to the concepts of gender mainstreaming, conventions and related areas.

The Academy is a very good initiative on the part of the Centre and the efforts of the Gender team were highly appreciated. The training methodology was excellent, and I hope it will be possible to maintain its quality. It is conducive to learning more about one’s own skills and the importance of gender-sensitive approaches for national organizations.

The academy helped me to utilize my skills better, to focus on enhancing my knowledge and improving my ability to mainstream gender in every field of life. It was highly participative. I now understand the key aspects of gender in the development process and its importance in the project cycle.

The resource persons held our attention throughout. Their simple style was not intimidating, while the depth of their knowledge was evident. The agenda and learning materials were very relevant. In every session I could identify my weaknesses and strengths.

After participating in the Gender Academy, I was given the task of reviving the Gender Section at IRM, to improve the capacity of professionals to mainstream the gender perspective in their work. So far I have trained the professionals of three rural support programmes by running two-days workshops on "Gender Responsive Governance" and "Breaking through the Glass Ceiling". In addition, I was selected as a consultant for two specialized gender-related training events on “Staff Capacity Building in Gender in Emergencies and Gender Analysis”, and “Age and Gender disaggregated data collection with the use of tools and need-based checklists”.

Being able to deliver the six days’ training myself was wonderful – all thanks to the Gender Academy I attended in Turin.
